Job Objective

The General Tradesman in the Engineering Department will provide skilled support across a wide range of maintenance, repair, and engineering-related tasks. This role is critical to ensuring the smooth operation of facilities, equipment, and infrastructure. The successful candidate will demonstrate versatility in multiple trades, technical knowledge, and a strong commitment to safety and efficiency

Essential Job Tasks

Maintenance & Repairs
Perform routine and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil systems.
•     Equipment Support
Assist engineers with installation, modification, and repair of machinery, tools, and equipment.
•     General Trades Work
Carry out carpentry, welding, painting, fabrication, and other skilled trades as required.
•     Troubleshooting
Diagnose minor faults in systems and equipment, and implement effective solutions.
•     Project Assistance
Support engineering projects by preparing work areas, tools, and materials.
•     Safety Compliance
Follow departmental safety protocols and ensure all tasks meet regulatory standards.
•     Documentation
Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent.
•     Collaboration
Work closely with engineers, technicians, and other tradesmen to complete assignments efficiently.
•     Emergency Response
Provide immediate repair services to minimize downtime of critical systems.

Areas of Responsibility

•     Carry out routine and preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and civil systems within the department.
•     Assist engineers in installation, modification, and repair of equipment and machinery.
•     Perform general trades work including carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, and fabrication as required.
•     Support engineering projects by preparing tools, materials, and work areas.
•     Troubleshoot and resolve minor technical issues under the guidance of engineers and supervisors.
•     Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time allocation.
•     Ensure compliance with safety standards, departmental procedures, and regulatory requirements.
•     Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other tradesmen to complete projects efficiently.
•     Provide emergency repair services to minimize downtime of critical systems.

Required Qualifications

•     Proven experience as a tradesman in an engineering or industrial environment.
•     Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and civil maintenance practices.
•     Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
•     Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, and basic workshop equipment.
•     Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability across multiple trades.
•     Good communication and teamwork abilities.
•     Relevant certifications or licenses (e.g., electrical, welding, plumbing) preferred.

Work Experience

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in general maintenance, repair, and engineering support roles.
